Battling ‘wee ladies’ produce storming display at Reading

27 January 2019

U16 Girls A 3 - 3 Reading U16 girls

The under 16s ventured to Reading HC with some trepidation after their previous mauling earlier in the season and the portents weren’t great with a couple of late dropouts and Potter forgetting her skort. Our warm up wasn’t great either, being denied a D to work in and the team talk consisted of telling them to try and ruin Reading’s Sunday. Which they duly did. With a hard core of 13 players, all of them worked their socks off and harried and hassled the opposition to knock them off their stride. Susie and Annabelle were rock solid in defence and Tiggy and Potter swapped positions, which worked well. Gemma T was outstanding and once I convinced her vital she was to the team, she stopped talking to Radar the umpire. A great passing move resulted in Rosie being perfectly positioned to score. One nil at half time, we agreed to stick to our passing plan, fully expecting our talented opponents to come back hard. Millie was working hard in goal and made several important saves, but eventually Reading scored twice in quick order. Rather than succumb to this onslaught, we pushed forwards and Bizza, who tormented their defence with her pace all game, pounced on a defensive lapse to equalise. Then Potter played a great pass to Mimi, who used her pace to storm into their D and slot past their keeper to take a 3-2 lead. With 5 minutes to go, we were unlucky to concede a deflected short corner strike - poor Susie - and although we continued to push for a winner, the game ended in a 3 all draw. A brilliant performance by Kara’s wee ladies.
