Men's 6th continue winning ways with local derby victory

19 January 2019, 11:30, Tilsley Park

Men's 6s 5 - 4 Abingdon Men's 2s

Match report Mens 6s v Abingdon Abingdon 4-5 Oxford Hawks. Local derbies are always tricky and our trip down the A34 proved to be no different, in fact we were seemingly still on it for the first 10 minutes of the game. Ash described his former club team as “being recently rejuvenated and putting out a strong side and giving a performance that belies their league position”. Another team full of ‘ringers’…. Abingdon started at a super-fast pace and were two up inside the first ten minutes as we got out of the cars. Defensive frailty and basic errors caused the goals. However, once we started to play, there was only one side in it. We passed the ball crisply all over the pitch and Matt was controlling the midfield. The game was played at good pace, which ultimately played into our hands as Abingdon had neither the personnel or the ability to maintain it but we did very well to keep them in it for a long time! The match officials provided a further test of our patience, which we passed, with only one green card issued late on. It was a credit to us that we maintained our composure throughout. The fightback began when Dawson junior finished like Dawson senior and the other goals came from Ed, who slipped in a hatrick, and Ash put one past his old team. Always nice. Ed ensured we would go to half time on top hopefully, but we decided to allow them to play and were hanging on at 3-3! The second half started like the first, with Abingdon on top and once again we were behind. Once again, we showed enormous character and resolve and played some great hockey to draw level and then go ahead. Arthur Baldock and George Guillain were a constant threat up front for us, causing no end of trouble for Abingdon, and they were ably supported by Aaron and Will who both had excellent games. We played well for long periods and dominated possession without putting the game to bed, a lesson to learn, but the win was deserved and the run continues……
