Twas the night before Christmas and all through the field,
The players were stirring, getting ready for their yield,
The gloves, pads and sticks were hung in the changing rooms with care,
In hope that the game would soon would be there.
The Hawks players were ready, they’ve trained and they’ve bled,
With visions of hat-tricks dancing in their heads.
The pre-match chat was parked, the bodies were taped,
What a beautiful day for hockey followed by cake.
When out on the field there arose such a clatter,
Sticks were dropped, what exactly was the matter?
The Hawks players they flocked across the field like a flash,
The ball hit the backboard, but it was disallowed, ah trash!
One player was sent to the sin bin for a timeout,
To calm down, to re-think .. what was that all about!
They’d get two minutes each, a penance for their sins,
Then come back out and go at it again.
The tackles, stick handles, and slap shots they fly,
But the goalie says, “No!” each and every time.
The game has come down to the last little bit,
The crowd rises to their feet, urging their team not to quit.
Hawks gets the ball with one last chance to score,
As the clock ticks downs, we need one goal more.
The ball moves left then right, and rifled down the line,
The forwards beat the defence, was it a sign?
The ball squirts free, it’s there for the taking,
The away team picks it up and there they go accelerating.
The goalie, she looks through the steel of her cage,
Her weak spots the forward will have to gauge.
The shot flies through the thin winter air,
The ball spinning and twisting, this the goalie must snare.
The goalkeeper lunges, to her left with the glove,
But the sound of ball hitting the net the crowd would surely love.
With a thud and a swoosh as the ball hits the net,
The forward wipes her brow of her sweat.
The whistle sounds loud for all to hear,
This was the greatest game of the year.
With sticks raised high in salute to the crowd,
The away team has won and wow, it is loud!
The Hawks stars huddle and then head out of sight,
The captain calls out, “Merry Christmas to all and to all a happy hockey night!”
