Ladies 5s make it 9 out of 9 wins in the league

01 December 2018, 11:30, Banbury Road North (Top)

Ladies' 5s 6 - 2 Newbury & Thatcham Ladies' 3s

Hawks L5s played Newbury & Thatcham 3s, aiming to protect their 100% record in the league, hoping to bang in a few more goals to improve their superior goal difference, and not forgetting the pressure of fantasy league points.

Both teams came out strong with Hawks losing possession too easily and Newbury’s tactic was to punt the ball up the field quickly. Few chances were created in the first exchanges until Newbury won a short corner, but a deflection off a defender diverted the ball into the Hawks goal. Hawks were now in unfamiliar territory, being behind in a match this season ……. But have no fears, this now spurred the team into action and we began playing our flowing hockey that has earned us top spot in the league. Jacs hit to post following a strike from a penalty corner and then the goals began to flow.

1-1 Bizza equalised after a number of tantalising runs down the right wing, stealing the ball off the keepers pads and slotting it into the goal

2-1 Hawks took the lead after Pip’s tenacity scrambled a ball over the line after the initial shot was saved from a penalty corner

3-1 Bizza’s second came after a flowing team move right through the heart of Newbury, finished with a dink over the advancing keeper

Half-time team talk from Polly, harribo and a great team spirit took us into the second half believing everything was possible.

4-1 Pip popped up again, this time picking up the ball after an initial save from open play

4-2 Newbury scored, a momentary lapse in concentration allowed the away team space to score

5-2 Sherene got in on the act, following a steal from Jade, great work down the right and Sherene connected first time with the ball to make it 5

6-2 Bizza kept her best to last, following a great pass from Caroline, her reserve hit struck the backboard with venom

A team performance with contributions from everybody, too many to mention, but it was the forwards who made all the news. MOM Bizza stole the show but I must make special references to Mary who made a number of awesome reserve stick tackles during critical times in the game and Millie who made a couple of great saves in goal.

Late item - I have been reprimanded for missing Susan's goal line clearance - bravo Lady Macerlain.

So, that’s 9 matches and 9 wins, can we make it 10 out of 10 before the Christmas break? Loving hockey right now ………
