"optimism is the faith that leads to achievement.."

01 December 2018, 10:30, Banbury Road North (Near)

Men's 7s 6 - 0 Newbury & Thatcham Men's 6s

With some much derided motivational emails floating about after the rather depressing defeat to the league leaders last week, the pre match team talk was then disturbed by two things...

Dave Wells announced his return to fitness by declining the starting position at the back because he had to go to the loo..(did he not think about that beforehand..?!!) and due to the timing of the umpire whistle calling the captains together, the team had no idea what the formation would be...

All this after watching the oppo not looking anything like bottom of the table courtesy of their rather organised warm up...

Anyway onwards...

After a tense start the team stared to click and after some early forays in the oppo D Timmy Martin decided to take matters into his own hands and scored a sublime goal.

The second took its time coming butt it did, and at half time 3-0 up was probably a fair reflection..

but, oh my, how it could have been more.....

The best miss in the whole of amateur (and professional) sport took place. a quick break by Steve Elliott and Rich Venables resulted in Elliott being forced wide but he managed to pass the ball square, past the keeper leaving Mr Venables a tap in of less than a metre...He managed to miss (cleanly) and then tried to finish with his foot which also he then missed...

Most observers were split as to which was most shocking... - the fact that Steve had actually passed the ball (and this time acurately..!) or that Mr Venables had managed to miss with stick and then with foot with the whole goal in front of him....

The second half started much as the first with Newbury rallying well, but tben the much improved work rate and shaoe of the 7's took the game by the scruff, and another three goals were scored with some excellent passing moves....

Man of the match Steve Elliott for that extra ordinary pass...( and some great leads to be fair..)

very closely followed by Rob McGrigor and Andy Graham for their contributions....

Thanks to Charlie Plumptre and Geoff Paver for umpiring and Venables junior (+1) for some inspiring support
