In a pretty one sided game, with Oxford in control for long periods, Hawks somehow managed to secure a valuable draw.
The first half was pretty tight but our cause was not helped by Foggy (when he goes off you know it must have hurt!) getting a smash on the head and having to leave the field after only a few minutes. Hawks managed to take the lead but Oxford gradually came into the game and equalised before half time after an abject piece of defending by Will who managed to stop a near certain goal on the line before calmly letting the centre forward to pop the ball of his stick into the net with Boggs stranded.
Oxford, by far the quicker and more incisive team, secured more and more ball in the second half and had numerous chances to put us away. They scored twice after further calamitous defending by Will and looked to be running out clear winners. Only Boggs, with some excellent saves and Dave Cooke and Tom Murray stood tall in the midst of huge pressure. Oxford failed to finish off any number of 2 on 1 opportunities. Apparently they had practiced these exact scenarios in training during the week….....
We were still in the game, won a short corner, which Luke smashed wide of the post but the ball was somehow turned in by the defender. In the last minute another corner was won, Dave struck the ball which was deftly turned in by Anton.
Oxford and Hawks were shocked in equal measure in one of the most one sided draws we could remember..
MOM to Dave Cooke, the first time in 5 years apparently!
DOD to a crestfallen Will although Oxford’s forward line gave him a run for his money.
