On a wet and windy Saturday we knew we had a tough match ahead of us with Sonning ladies 1s, but we were ready for the fight! Protective bin bags were at the ready, or some (Sauven) showed up with a posh hockey bag, with waterproof cover already fitted at the bottom. Show off. After a solid but wet warm-up, we emerged kind-of ready!
As we set off we were slow to find our feet as they snuck in an early goal at 6 minutes in. That gave us the determination to pick up the pace, increasing the concentration and focus resulting in a well-earned short corner. We stuck to our favourite; explosive injection from Potter, then Lizzie slipped it right to MOM: Victoria who popped it back to the P spot where Lizzie beautifully deflected it in. We were then on an even playing field again 1-1. First half showed some positive play from Hawks but they were one step ahead and managed to get a cheeky goal in before half time.
Sonning seemed so much more ready and raring to go and in the second half we blinked and a few (OK, 6...) more goals went in. Then out of nowhere Hopey made a run for it, soaring from the back, fighting off their defence, then found Potter who superbly deflected in our second goal 5 minutes from the final whistle.
Shame about the final score as it didn’t reflect the overall game, but we’ll be ready next time we face them, hardened to the English winter weather!
DOD: Victoria Sauven – for boasting about warming up with her Aga at home (albeit her m&ds!)
