The morning started off misty and a little chilly but as the players arrived at Banbury Road North the sun came through to give a perfect day for hockey and the first development league game of the season.
The early exchanges in the game were even but after some strong defensive play from Hawks, the pressure began to build on the Bicester defence. This pressure led to a string of chances and after a couple close calls, Hawks took the lead through Fraser McKenzie. Fraser Followed up with a second before Henry Henman scored the goal of the game with a deft deflection from an excellent reverse stick cross by Julian Laird. Bicester came back in to the game but great persistence and commitment in defence, especially from Theo Baldock, meant that Bicester could not break through. Two more goals before half time came through Tommy Winter who showed a poachers instinct to be in the right place to finish off more great attacking play. Bicester did manage to score following up on to score from close range after a cracking save from Orlando Impey in the Hawks goal.
The second half saw Hawks continue to play strong hockey, moving the ball around the back brilliantly to create multiple further chances. Fraser completed his hatrick with another strong finish before Charlie Tuthill smashed a goal in from the top of the D after a mazy dribble. The scoring was completed when Julian played Ben Harkness in down the left wing. Ben then showed great awareness to play in Laurence Trigg at the far post who slotted the ball in to the bottom corner to give the keeper no chance.
This was a strong performance from Hawks and with many players who didn’t make the team this week pushing for places in the coming games the future looks bright for the U12 Boys.
