With the Skipper away again, this time with a “suspicious lump on (between) his legs”, the Magnificent Sevens assembled on a sunny day at BRN.
With a team made up almost entirely of forwards, Chair (acting Captain) had the usual challenge of setting up a team shape.
Shambles Shirley threw himself on his sword and offered to play at the back – a decision he would come to rue!
Hawks started well against a mixed / young Henley side and made a number of early chances, all squandered.
Darby eventually struck (rarely from the top of the D) following a nice build up and pass from the newly returned Affie.
In truth, Hawks should have been 3-0 up and the game would have been all but over…
Sadly, this was as good as it got, and there were few highlights to follow:
The High Sherriff’s paddy just before half time (and continued rumblings in to the break) may have been about the best of it.
“Shambles by name, Shambles by nature” had a bit of a howler at the top of the D (his own D) which led to the equalizer.
Shortly after he put his body on the line to stop a reverse stick lifted shot – “now Shambles is no oil painting” but he hasn’t moved this fast for years to get his face out of the way, taking the blow on his shoulder!
After half time Hawks conceded two quick goals to make it 3-1. Thanks to Sobey for keeping valiantly with little protection.
There was another short spell of pressure which offered up more missed chances.
But is was all too late…shooting practice required before next week, me thinks!
Scorer: Darby – 10 mins (open play)
