With home support, and having not yet won a match, Wallingford came out strong and ready to contest for the game. Several waves of quick, fierce attacks from Wallingford resulted in Hawks defending a handful of short corners in quick succession. Wallingford could not convert as their efforts were calmly seen off by Linda.
The first half saw some frantic Hockey, with goal scoring opportunities for both teams. Lizzie then took control in the middle of the pitch, Hawks began to pull together as a team and retained possession for longer periods of time. Rosie put through a lovely ball to Man of The Match Meg on the top of the D who, 1 on 1 with the keeper, picked her corner and slotted the ball into the back of the goal!
Wallingford responded with mounted sustained pressure on the Hawks defence which led to an equaliser, 1-1 at halftime.
With some wise words from Tom Hawks came out the blocks determined to get the three points. However a composed Wallingford side managed to edge the lead first. A well struck goal followed by a dramatic squeal!
Unphased and determined to push through the remaining minutes of the game, Hawks raised their intensity and continued to pressure the Wallingford defence; the forwards pressing increasingly hard. Eventually the tireless leg work from Potter and Emma S paid off, dismantling the Wallingford fullbacks and allowing Emma to equalise for Hawks with a cooly executed goal.
Thanks to Tom Godding for support on the bench, and the dedicated Hawks fans who came to cheer for us away in Wallingford!
