The October rain (ok- this should be November Rain to be the Guns and Roses track) before Hawks left BRN, the huddling in the Hawks clubroom before travelling and then in Newbury and Thatcham club room on arrival, suggested a slow start come up. Can You Stand the Rain – New Edition - I thought. No surprises then when Hawks went 1-0 dawn within 5 minutes. A N&T midfielder was left to run from his own half without challenge to the top of the Hawks D. A hit into the D was deflected from a foot or two in front of Jack leaving him no chance. We Couldn’t Blame it on the Rain (Milli Vanilli).
Unfortunately, the goal didn’t brighten up Hawks and a second followed soon after. Who’ll Stop the Rain- Creedence Clearwater Revival- asked Andy and Tim in central defence of our midfield? This one came from a penalty corner which deflected off 2 hawks players before creeping over the line. Here Comes the Rain Again (Eurythmics).
But, if there is one thing this team has shown this season so far it is that they don’t give up. Once again, a come-back started. Barney Barber received the ball in central midfield and slid a pinpoint pass to OJ in the D. OJ rounded the keeper but left a very narrow angle for his shot which slid past both posts with no-one running on to tap in. However, seconds later Sam fed OJ out wide left and his cross/ shot was turned in by James Holder sliding in at the far post (yes, James Holder the right half was now our furthest forward attacker). We are now Only Happy when it Rains (Garbage).
At 2-1 N&T threatened again but Jack came out smartly to save when one-on-one with a forward and made a good save from a high strike from a central position.
But just before half-time the 2-goal advantage was restored with another close deflection past Jack which left him feeling like a Fool in the Rain (Led Zepplin).
At half time, few stern words from James and Jack (involving the word ‘basics’ many times) sent Hawks back out with new energy and they threatened to Set Fire to the Rain (Adele). Another goal back came from OJ after he stole the ball from a poor clearance, fed Alex in the D and when the ball broke loose OJ slapped home from the P spot.
3-2 and it could have gone either way. But, with 10 minutes to go the game was decided by an excellently struck penalty corner for N&T. Fast, clean and straight tin the bottom corner.
Whitey had a chance to bring the scoreline back again but missed his shot. Several hits into the D from Ben nearly found a Hawks player but each was cut out. Time ran out and I was left with it Raining in my Heart (Buddy Holly).
MoM was a close call between Barney and OJ. The captain decided it with the casting vote for OJ.
DoD went to Barney for getting carded without anyone knowing why.
Me? I watched from under my Umbrella (Rihanna) or was I the wally with the brolly?
