A valiant 11 travelled to Basingstoke with a determination to enjoy a run out in the sun after the rain of the previous day. A pleasant surprise as Helen arrived unannounced to swell numbers to 12.
Basingstoke were generally younger and fitter and played well together. Their pressure soon paid off and a number of goals were converted despite the best Eagle efforts. There were times that the Eagles made some good passing moves and it was after one of these that Polly Fitzgerald scored their first goal.
At half time a change of formation meant that it was easier to close down the midfield enabling the pressure to be lessened and more passing moves managed. However there was only one more goal for the Eagles scored by Helen Backhouse, and a number of others in reply from Basingstoke. The Eagles played a spirited game, trying to move the ball amongst themselves but were defeated by a better Basingstoke side.
Particular thanks go to Celie who came out of retirement to play an outstanding match in goal; to Dot and Lynda from Kidlington who flew for the Eagles for the first time; and to Helen Backhouse from Witney who battled jet lag and a trapped nerve to play, and brought a lovely puppy to entertain our young supporters.
It was an enjoyable run out despite the defeat and as always the chat afterwards and the tea and cake topped it all.
