The sunny hot day from the week before seemed a distant memory as grey skies and rain brought out the fleeces, base-layers and waterproof coats for this week's home game against Oxford Ladies 6s! Still captain Becky was back in the squad and with her daughters at her side was making sure that all 16 of us had a good warm up and knew our starting positions. With Jan's match day app, to aid the subbing routines, on her phone at the ready Hawks started to mount pressure on the Oxford side right from the first whistle. Opportunities came and went with some Oxford counter attacks ably halted by the solid Hawks defence line up. Finally the dead-lock was broken when a free-hit taken by Becky found Tori in the D. Her shot towards goal was deflected by Alessia for the first goal of the game. With subbing going on as per the app - or at least that's what we told Jan - Hawks were not going to let Oxford back into the game. A pass out from Phil in defence found Monica free to pass the ball into the D where it was Tori who put Hawks 2-0 ahead before the half-time whistle went.
Sheltering in the dug out Jessica's notes on the first half performance were interpreted by her mum - move the ball around, be ready for the rebounds and better communication on each line! With such wise words of wisdom ringing in our ears, the second half started with continued pressure from all Hawks players. Then when an Oxford body stopped the ball on the line a penalty stoke to Hawks was awarded. A rare occurrence at this level so who would step up to the spot? It was Dette who, with some wise words from Linda, boldy went where not many Ladies 6s have gone before and soon Hawks were 3-0 up. The rain continued to fall and Oxford continued to try to get forward but neither could make any lasting impression that affected the final result. A strong team performance all round with MOM going to Esmie.
