Hawks ladies 2s travelled to Henley to face a familiar foe in their final pre-season fixture. Arriving in fine form following a big mid week win against Oxford Uni and an inspired victory in the Oxford Derby, Hawks were keen to finish their pre-season with one final flurry.
The September sun seemed to take the team by surprise and we were sluggish to start, allowing Henley to dictate the pace in the early exchanges and sneak ahead through a well worked goal. With determination Hawks grew into the game and battled back to dominate possession approaching half time and Harriet popped up on the back post for the second consecutive game to finish off a fine attacking move by Kathryn and draw the teams level going into the break.
After some wise words, Hawks came out of the blocks at quite a pace and barely gave Henley a hit, carving the opposition apart in wave after wave of attack. The go ahead goal came from Gabs who weaved her way into the D to score and this was closely followed by a third with marauding full back April improvising at a penalty corner and burying the ball in the bottom corner.
Hawks continued to control the game and their continued intensity led to a turnover in the middle of the pitch from which man of the match Harriet expertly picked out Emily who found herself unmarked in the D and able to slot the ball away. The scoring was rounded out late in the half by tiny wee Claire who picked up the ball in front of goal and calmly turned to fire the ball past the helpless keeper.
Another strong game for the team which sends them into the first league game with excitement.
