The ladies 2’s started their new season with a trip to Eastcote. Hawks knew that this wasn’t going to be an easy fixture as in the past this has always proven to a difficult club to beat.
So with the rain coming down the match started and like many season openers neither team really seized control, the possession went back and forth and it was all a bit tense. As the match settled down Eastcote started to apply some pressure on the Hawks goal, but the defence stood strong and they manged to keep out all that Eastcote had to throw at them.
Then Hawks began to have some attacks of their own. Some great link up play from the defence to midfield to the forwards meant that on the break Hawks looked dangerous, however the Eastcote goalkeeper kept her side in it and didn’t let any shots in. Hawks, still not at their best, kept applying pressure on the Eastcote goal. Shots were coming from all angles, with Fi, Harriet, Emily, Helen, Jo and Kara all narrowly missing.
But on 25 minutes the deadlock was broken. Abbie had run up the pitch and passed the ball to Lexi who was stood at the top of the D. She had a quick shot on goal which was deflected front of the goal keeper to just inside the post by Claire. 1-0 Hawks. The score remained 1-0 until half time with both teams having further shots on goal but being unable to convert.
The half time talk had words of wisdom from Emily, Kara and Dizzy who all said we needed to stop running with the ball and pass it. So with this knowledge Hawks started off the better team having numerous chances in the opening minutes and it was not long until Hawks scored a second goal. A break from the defence up the centre of the pitch lead to a pin point pass to Lexi who was at the top of the D again. Her shot went through the goalkeeper and before the defender could clear it off the line Claire was there to tap the ball home. 2-0 Hawks.
However straight after the whistle blew to re-start the match Eastcote had an attack which resulted in a goal. 2-1 Hawks. After this both teams were going for it as the next goal was vital. But unfortunately for Hawks they were down to 10 men as a green card had been given out. However wen Hie came back on she was fired up and immediately took on a number of players, got herself into the D and then smashed the ball through the goalkeeper’s legs to make the score 3-1 Hawks. Hawks then had to absorb some pressure once again, but the solid back line of April, Abbie, Laura, Vics, Jess and Emily in goal kept the score line the same.
Still fired up from earlier, Hie once again went on an attack this time up the middle of the pitch. Her shot from the top of the D was neatly deflected in by Kathryn who was standing at the back post unmarked. 4-1 Hawks. In the final minutes Hawks kept coming forward despite Jess getting a green card. Abbie drove through a number of Eastcote players into the D. She hit the ball across the goal for Claire to deflect the ball into the roof of the net to complete her hat trick and to make the final score 5-1.
This was a great start to the season for the ladies 2’s. It was by no means their best performance, but that doesn’t take away from this amazing result. Next week Milton Keynes.
