Ladies' 5s finish firmly with a 3-1 win away at Buckingham.

29 September 2018, 10:30, Stowe School

Ladies' 5s 3 - 1 Buckingham Ladies 3s

As the team gathered on a cold, early morning there was a promise of good things to come. An early autumn sun was breaking through the clouds as we approached Stowe and took in the truly splendid sight of the school and its grounds.

Unfortunately the first half was not as splendid for Hawks. They started slowly and despite eventually being the better side were unable to take advantage of their possession and chances were not converted. It was Buckingham who finished strongly, scoring a goal from a deflected shot which left Purdy little chance in goal. So it was 1-0 down at half time.

A stirring half time team talk and a desire from all the team to play with more commitment and composure. Play was improved right from the start of the second half and the Buckingham defence was under some sustained pressure. After about 5 minutes the ball was shot at goal and having hit a defenders’ shoulder looped over everyone and landed in the back of the goal. Unfortunately the whistle had been blown for a short just before the ball crossed the line and a short corner given. This time there was no mistaking the advantage as the ball hit a Buckingham foot straight into Sherene’s path and she swept it into the goal.

With the scores level the confidence of the team went up and it wasn’t long before Mimi made one of her impressive runs and passed a measured through ball past the advancing keeper to Sherene who couldn’t miss from 2 yards out. By now Hawks were dominating the midfield and Buckingham’s attacks were less frequent. A well organised defence was able to stop their runners and tackle strongly to prevent their attackers having clear shots at goal.

Hawks scored their third as the ball was moved with pace from defence through midfield. A shot on goal was well saved but not well enough to prevent Polly picking up the rebound and slotting home.

Buckingham came back strongly and put the ball in the net from open play, only for it to be disallowed as it had gone in off the forwards’ body.

So the promise of good things arrived with a strong recovery in the second half and another 3 points for the team. Teas were immeasurably improved by a magnificent cake from Mimi’s mother. MOM Jane has a high standard of cake baking to maintain!
