Falcons open the league season with a win although rarely moved out of second gear and remained disjointed throughout. Winchester battled hard and our thanks to Charles Potter for supporting their endeavours in a Winchester shirt who was assisted by former Hawk Ian Caws (Cawsy) now wearing a Winchester shirt.
With a solid back line of Blomley, Billington, Brees and the returning Robinson (big nose), Jones was able to push forward to raise the tempo of a lucklustre performance.
HIs encouragement and good interplay with the movement of White and Burrell created several openings but was yet to reach some of the flowing hockey of the previous campaign.
Eventually Bear Smith did what he does well and smashed in a short corner and created another for a penalty stroke which Kaluza slotted home.
Two more for Smith and a nicely worked goal for Griffiths ended the game but not without Winchester producing 2 fine goals in response with the first a reward for their hard working midfield, including current and former Hawks Potter and Caws. Their second was a deft touch past a wrong footed Brees in goal which any forward would be proud to claim.
Blomley was rightly the recipient of the Man of the Match award.
