Even though it was a wet and miserable day Hawks started from the moment they stepped into the changing room......with a good team talk from their new captain (Pollyanna FitzGerald) who welcomed new players to the team. With a lot of half backs it meant some players would be playing out of position and having to learn very quickly the roll of an inner. Out came the whiteboard, followed by a vigorous warm-up on the pitch taken by the captain.
Marlow’s GK was running late, so with a helmet borrowed from Hawks they played the first 10 minuets with a kicking back. With a Marlow pushback Hawks came out hard and fast, double teaming to get the ball back, looking to take advantage of no GK. It was 0-0 when Marlow replaced the kicking back for their GK.
The last 20 minuets Hawks grew into the game, started to pass with more conviction and although at times they were drawn into some scrappy play they managed to channel the ball well and this resulted in some lovely goals. First goal came from Mimi, which was quickly followed by a further 2 goals from Pip. Pip’s second goal came from a build up of play from a strong defence and midfield.......with a solid pass from Jacs to Sherene who found Pip in the D and scored on her reverse stick (Hawks 3-0 at half time).
After a good coaching talk from Tom, Hawks aimed to go out hard and get more goals.......with Bizza and Mimi continuing to keep up the pressure, Bizza was soon rewarded with a goal.
As the weather took a turn for the worse Marlow’s game turned, with a run of short-corners came their first goal, followed closely by 2 more goals. With 2 minuets left to play Hawks just needed to keep hold of the ball for a win...... whistle blown at full-time saw Hawks with a win, but lots to reflect on.
Thank you to Gabs for managing the subbing and Tom for coaching from the sideline.
