In contrast to so many Sundays this year, Hawks U18s travelled to Surbiton for their last game of the season on one of the hottest April days for many years. For eight of the players it would be their last junior game for Hawks and the team got off to a great start when Maddie Whitwell scored after 5 minutes.
Jen Wells and Annie Denly combined effectively for Hawks’ next goal and a second strike from Annie Denly put Hawks further ahead. As the half went on, both teams created chances and Surbiton pulled one back before half time.
Special mention must go to Rachael Potter for taking on goalkeeping responsibilities and doing a tremendous job and to Jess Madden Waite for stepping up from the U16s.
As 5-1 is significantly preferable to 4-2, the point was made at half time that the next goal would be crucial and after a number of threats from Surbiton, Jen Wells ensured that it was Hawks who went further ahead when she followed up a shot from Siena. Annie Denly made it six and completed her hat trick with an unstoppable penalty corner strike and Poppy Webb scored number seven with an equally fine strike to the far post past a diving keeper. Gabs McErlain scored an eighth after making good use of the space created by the much requested transfer! Jen Well also claimed her hat trick and Annie Denly took the total to double figures in the last minute of the game with a personal tally of four goals.
We wish Rachael Potter, Annie Denly, Emily Taylor, Gabs McErlain, April Bedford, Zara Khan, Maddie Whitwell and Madelyne Mahbon all the very best as they move on from junior hockey at Hawks although we look forward to seeing them all back at the Club in the not too distant future and for the younger members of the team, we look forward to doing it all again next year!
