High hopes for Ladies' 7s in a heat wave
21 April 2018, 11:00, Banbury Road North (Top)
Ladies' 7s 3 - 2 Sonning Ladies 5s
It was a team of youth and experience that met for the last league game of the season. Given it was hot we could have done with more than the bare eleven players. Many thanks to Becky Madden-Waite who offered to be GK for us. Or we would have been only ten!
We had the experience in the centre of the team and left the width for young legs to explore. They played beautifully together finding each other with short triangles. The game was mostly down Sonning’s end and were soon rewarded with a goal. Gemma Croker scored from a short corner with a lovely strike. Sonning managed to break away and scored one also. However, Lucy then got one back so that we were 2-1 at half time.
We did more beautiful hockey in the second half. Pam got the third goal with a lovely strike from the top of the D. So, we were 3-1 up. They got one back, but we continued to press the attack and they were not able to equalise. We finished the last game of the season with a 3-2 win. This was enough to move us up to 4th in the division which is a very creditable place to end the season.
Millie Lane was voted player of the match. She had a brilliant game as right back – she has not played on the pitch since Year 5! Thanks must also go to Mrs Hanslip for going to get mouthguard and shin pads for Millie just before the start.
