A strong squad of Eagles set off for Wycombe. A gentle warm up led to a slightly slow start and it wasn’t long before a well aimed Wycombe shot scraped the post and hit the backboard. This seemed to wake the Eagles up and as the half progressed they became more and more invlolved in the game. Having won a short corner there was a call from Jacqui Barlow to cover her, and reminiscent of years past the ball was expertly stick stopped by Clare Pritchard and a an unstoppable shot from Jacs was deflected into the back of the net by a defender. 1-1 at half time and all to play for. It was end to end play and the game could have gone either way. Wycombe were next to find the back of the net but after a discussion the goal was disallowed for a foot in the build up. A relief to the Eagles it was their turn next when another short corner was won at the Eagles attacking end. In what appeared to be a well practiced move the stick stopper and striker were left standing at the top of the D. The ball was picked up by Caroline backing up. It was sent back to Rebecca at the circle rim who found Clare ( no i) P in space and the ball was slotted home to put them in front.
Wycombe fought back hard and and put the Eagles defence under considerable pressure soaked up by the defence and drew some good saves from Linda in goal. They were unable to find the goal however and it ended 2-1 to the Eagles.
A close game well umpired, our thanks to Rachel Bellamy for travelling with us to whistle. MOM went to Clare P. More brownies please!
