Hawks Ladies 3rd XI went into their match against top of the table Amersham & Chalfont at Banbury Road North determined to not let the 5-0 away defeat from earlier in the season happen again.
Fullbacks Megan Hope and Nicky Thornton kept the Hawks defence tight for the opening parts of the game and Laura Scragg kept the ball moving up the pitch positively on the left-hand side. Despite a good focus from the team, a momentary lapse of concentration close to half time let an unmarked Amersham forward storm into the D and finish strongly in the top corner. 1-0 to Amersham. Hawks reacted well and pushed on through the tireless work of Katie Merrick, Lexi Newall and Emma Stephenson in the midfield but failed to test the away team’s defence with any clear cut chances and went in 1-0 down at half time.
Buoyed by a positive halftime talk, the home team in maroon started to really test the Amersham defence with more decisive pressing from forwards Jen Wells and Giorgia Laird helped by Rory Phibbs’ sideline coaching. Shortly into the half, Hawks broke at pace and Laura Marshall’s deflected cross found Lizzie Siese unmarked in the D who calmly slotted into the right-hand corner. 1-1.
The equaliser from Hawks really opened the game up and end to end hockey ensued with one of the best defensive performances of the season. The game looked to be heading for deadlock when one small stray bit of marking allowed the same Amersham forward to put a strike away from close distance and take 3 points for the away team. The match finished shortly after at 2-1 to Amersham & Chalfont. Whilst disappointed to lose the match, Hawks can take many positives from the performance as they look to move up the league table.
