Ladies' 5s deny close rivals Phoenix to continue good run

10 February 2018, 11:00, Banbury Road North (Top)

Ladies' 5s 4 - 2 Phoenix & Ranelagh Ladies 2s

Hawks Ladies' 5s hosted close rivals Phoenix on a cold and wet February morning with a strong squad of 16 players. Phoenix in orange had the better of the early exchanges, Purdy having to make a couple of important clearances. Hawks grew into the game however, with Sherene doing her usual big turn and shot, then the same player drove down the left flank to the byline before shovelling the ball goalwards, but taking a big deflection off the defender’s stick the ball looped gracefully over the line and nestled in the backboard. 1-0. Two minutes later it was 2-0 as Sophie Dawes timed her run onto the right hand post perfectly to score. Phoenix got back into the game as they won a long corner and some poor marking saw their left wing free to tap in easily. Hawks were by now dominating possession, Sherene having a couple of good chances from a short, then a one on one with their keeper, knocked her flying. The away side however still looked dangerous and pegged Hawks back before half time with a well worked goal and nearly scored a third as Purdy scrambled back and got badly winded. In the second half, Hawks dominated and we had chances to take the lead before Georgia made a great run down the right to find Sherene at the far post to make it 3-2. Purdy was still called up to make two good saves before we clinched the points as Tiggy dispossessed their winger, found Sherene, who in turn found Emma K ghosting in at the far post to make it a deserved 4-2 win.
