Hawks 2s travelled at the crack of dawn to Sonning to try and right the wrongs of the previous weekends result.
After a solid warm up the team started with real intent and won a penalty corner in the opening moments of the game. Despite not converting on that occasion, the team maintained their positive start and won a second corner. This time Claire Werlinger popped up at the back post to give Hawks a well deserved lead.
Continuing their aggressive start to the match, the forward line pressed high up the pitch and after winning the ball Emily Wilkins eliminated the last defender and slotted the ball under the keeper to double Hawks lead. This goal was followed quickly by another for Wilkins who deflected in at the near post following some great work from Fi Walton on the baseline.
Coming out for the second half three goals to the good, Hawks we’re keen to maintain their concentration and push on. They did just that when Heather Francis finished from a tight angle following a devastating fast break.
At 4-0 up the Hawks defence rode out a period of pressure as Sonning looked to claw their way back into the game and punished the opposition as Hie Sawyer finished off a fine counter attack and buried the ball in the far corner. Not content with a 5 goal lead Hawks pressed for more and Fi mopped up a loose ball and sent it goalwards to add her name to the scoresheet.
To round off the mornings scoring, Tiny Claire stooped low for a trademark deflection for her second of the day.
The Hawks ladies left the pitch rather pleased with their haul and a clean sheet, very much looking forward to facing Reading on Sunday.
