After a strong start, some lovely passing and a nice amount pressure in Amersham & Chalfont's half, we were all hoping the curse of the early conceded goal was broken. Our hopes however were the only things which were broken. The wind changed, the play switched and the curse remains. Unlike other weeks we retaliated fairly quickly and managed to secure a short corner, with a rare but formidable strike from Sue Clark we all heard that euphoric sound of the ball hitting the back board and equalised to 1-1. Momentary relief! The play continued fairly evenly with both sides having a good amount of possession, hawks at times were looking for the long pass into space and too often were finding no one was there to pick it up or the pass was a smidge too zealous and the forwards although pacy not quite in Usain Bolts category. Hawks were also picked up for trying to force the ball through players, this more often than not resulted in the ball being turned over. Unfortunately the level playing field diminished and we went in to half time 2-1 down.
After a positive and constructive team talk from Captain Rebecca Brodie and some great advice from Sue Clark we were going into the second half with determination to turn the game around and play some simple hockey. Despite determination, better communication and improved distribution of the ball we soon conceded again making the score 3-1 to A&C. Down but not out and with the first of two beautiful crosses from Lisa Scragg, Rebecca Black was able to pick up the ball and put it between their keepers legs bringing the score to 3-2 and giving Hawks a much needed lift. At this point we knew we had a chance of taking home the 3 points, but if the first half and the minutes leading up to our second goal were anything to go by, we also knew it was going to be a rollercoaster. The game took another dip and we conceded again, 4-2 to A&C although we didn't have to wait long for Lisa Scragg to do her thing and execute her second assist of the game. A cross into the D where Alex Grime took control over the ball and knocked it over the line making it 4-3. Hawks went on to successfully defend a number of quick succession penalty corners which were awarded against them, with not long left of the game and with equalising nipping at A&C heels and defeat whispering in Hawks ear both sides upped their game. With one last dip of that metaphoric roller coaster A&C managed to penetrate Hawks defence one last time and ended the match 5-3.
