Ladies 5s earn hard fought draw against top of the league

20 January 2018, 10:30, Tilsey Park

Ladies' 5s 3 - 3 Abingdon Ladies 1s

Hawks arrived at Tilsey Park determined to capitalise on last week's strong performance and come away from this tough fixture with points.

The first quarter Abingdon pressed hard and were strong on the break but we kept them out of our goal with good quality defending from Annabel,   Susan and Caroline. The outstanding performance however was from Purdy in goal with amazing diving saves and strong clearances. Abingdon's attack were rewarded after 17 minutes with a skilful goal.

Undaunted, we kept our structure with Jacs, Pip and inners Emma, Sophie and Lara connecting will with wide players Jane, Caroline, Sherene, Lydia and Jade. Before long, Jade and Lydia played a neat couple of passes which saw Lydia slot the ball in on the post. We were level!

Hawks were now on a roll and Abingdon seemed surprised by our play. We started to open up their defence with good passes and strong running. Tiggy initiated many attacks down the left and Becky closing down the opposition with good timing. Jacs sent a free hit wide left to Tiggy who showed great tenacity to work the ball past the defender and deliver it to Sophie on the T-spot.  She sent a cross into the p-spot and a rebound fell to Lydia to the ball home from a tricky angle. 2-1 up at half time.

After a rousing team talk we went back out determined to be prepared for a rejuvenated attack from the opposition. Ten minutes in Jane sent an amazing free hit in to Sherene at top D and her first time shot was helped into the goal by Pip.

Halfway through the second half, Abingdon suddenly seemed to wake up and they soon scored their second goal. Hawks then absorbed an enormous amount of pressure, with Purdy again keeping the ball out of the goal on many occasions. Close to the end Abingdon scored from a dubiously-awarded short but we were still proud to come away from this fixture with a valuable point.

Credit must go to Purdy for her excellent performance and she was unanimously voted MOM.
