After so much snow and freezing temperatures, the 3s had their first game since 2nd December! With a full squad of 16 names on the teamsheet, we arrived bright and early to face Wycombe 2s. Despite continued training and fitness, there were definitely some pre-match nerves which were expertly calmed by our hairdressers in the changing rooms!
We didn’t have first pushback but we pressured Wycombe aggressively from the start to win back possession. Hawks then dominated play with some fantastic long balls played by Laura Scragg that were expertly picked by Lizzie. We had some shots on goal and worked at the rebounds too which were sadly saved by the Wycombe keeper. However, continued possession gave the forwards the chance to attack the D, Giorgia got on the end of a shot on goal for a great deflection to put us 1-0 up. With fire in our bellies we played some lovely team hockey, using our transfer to change channels and open up space. Emma Stephenson gained possession and attacked hard down the left, beating several players on her way in to the D, before striking the ball right post. Giorgia was in the right place again on the P spot and scored another deflection to take us to 2-0 at half time.
After a motivating team talk and some percy pigs, we were ready to go out hard in the second half and so were Wycombe. The match was fast-paced and end to end at points but Hawks were hungry for another goal. Lizzie was determined to get on the scoresheet and after some near misses on short corners, she beat her defender and the keeper on the right post to find the backboard. 3-0 Hawks. With continued pressure, we attacked again and Giorgia scored again to give her a hattrick and to make the score 4-0.
Wycombe were clearly agitated by the score and began to dig deep and play hard, even though they were down to 10 players after their Captain received a green card. Wycombe caught us on the break and created an overload, allowing their free player to slap the ball into the air from the P spot and into the back of the net, 4-1. Wycombe were throwing players forward and were motivated from getting on the score-sheet. After sustained attacks, Wycombe worked it around our defence again and their player found a gap left post to give them their second goal.
Some great play continued from both teams but the final whistle blew and Hawks won 4-2. Special mention should go to Kirsty as fullback who threw an aerial ball down the line which was great to see and picked up by one of our forwards! A great first game back with a really positive team attitude. Emma S justifiably picked up some votes for MOM but Laura Scragg’s solid defence and skills meant she was our well-deserved MOM again!
