The girls under 14s A team had their second trip up to Stowe School in a month to face Buckingham HC, an early start on a cold, blustery but sunny day. We rocked up nice and early and although we did a warm up, it was a pretty lukewarm affair and consisted mostly of casual stretching along with intense chatting. I think our earlier comfortable win in the season caused us to be slightly casual in our approach, despite the coach’s exhortations, but once the game started we definitely dominated proceedings and created plenty of chances. However, we couldn’t breach their goal despite some nice attacking play, until the 8th minute when Harriet pegged down the right wing, along the back line to find her sister Lili to finish off from close range. We created plenty of short corners, although on occasions we got penalised for encroaching on the D and then for the injector not having a foot on the pitch – good learning points for all concerned. 1-0 at half time and I was so aggrieved I didn’t hand out the usual isotonic sweets (in truth, I’d forgotten them), but did ask them to pass more and stop running too much with the ball. In fairness, the conditions also caused issues to both teams; when the sun was out, it was difficult to differentiate between the black shirts of Buckingham and our purple shirts. Also, we had a proper leaf storm (is that a thing?) which covered the pitch, and would have stopped SWT trains running, which made it tricky to spot the ball among the seasonal debris. In the second half, a similar pattern was followed and we created loads of chances, lots of buzzing around up front from Clover, Flo and Becky, while their (different, but equally competent) keeper made a string of brilliant stick saves and Buckingham caused the odd threat on the break, although Freya, Caitie and Ffion dealt with these well; Amelia in goal just looked cold. To our rescue came our debutant however, in the shape of Bizza Cudlip who played up front on the wing for us and looks a very useful addition to the team. First she scored a well struck short corner into the backboard, then finished off with a second goal again following a decent drive down the wing. 3-0 then was the final score and although I think we can play better, it was nice to be able to try players in different positions and move them around a fair bit as we continued to roll our subs all over the pitch.
