First win lifts Hawks 5s off the bottom of the table!

11 November 2017, 16:00, Banbury Road North (Near)

Men's 5s 1 - 0 Sonning Men's 3s

This week saw the Oxford Hawks 5th team take on Sonning 3’s, a team just 1 point ahead in the table. The game had a strong start, with the Hawks attacking right from the start and a few shots almost finding their way into the goal. However, it wasn’t until the 20th minute when the Hawks found the goal with a great run from Will Smith to the end line and a pass back to Lawrence Green, who was waiting on the penalty spot to slot it into the bottom right corner. Hawks came close a few more times in the first half but were unsuccessful and ended the half 1-0 up.
The second half started with a few more opportunities from Sonning as they began to press the Hawks, causing keeper Jon Davies to make some spectacular saves to keep the Hawks in the game. The Hawks then had a goal unfortunately disallowed, when Lawrence Green deflected the ball into the net from a well-worked short corner routine, due to the keeper not being ready for the injection. This lead to a stressful final ten minutes, with Hawks only 1-0 up and Sonning trying hard to get something from the game. However the Hawks held on, leading to their first win of the season and taking them off bottom of the table.
Man of the Match was awarded to right-back Danny Johnson, for some brilliant aggressive drives down the wing, and some even better clearances from the D.
Next week the 5’s face Banbury 3’s, who are 3 points ahead in the league table. They are hoping that they can take this winning mentality to Banbury, for what should be a thrilling encounter between two rivals.
