Ladies 5s positive play "Pip" all 3 points in local derby!

Ladies' 5s 2 - 1 Oxford Ladies 5s
The instructions from Captain Emma had been not to wait for her in the changing rooms as she knew she would be running late and with no-one on the pitch before us she wanted us to get in a good warm up. Just one small problem forestalled her plan as she Whatsapp'd to apologise that she had the ball bag!! Having donned our shirts, Caroline spurred us on to head out into the damp conditions hoping that Lotty's hockey bag contained as many balls as it had shirts last weekend!? Warm up over and toss won Hawks were ready for the game to begin.
From the off Hawks applied forward pressure in the form of Lotty/Pip/Sherene/Jade and were soon forcing the Oxford defence and keeper to make some strong clearances out of their defence only to see the Hawks inner line (Sophie/Lara/Emma) to retrieve possession and fire the ball forward again. Oxford too managed the occasional forward foray of their own but the defensive line of Annabelle/Phil/Nix with GK Purdy stalled every attack. With the lack of finish from our open play chances, a Hawks short corner was awarded and Lotty broke the deadlock with a well struck top of the D strike to see the home side go 1-0 up. In return when Oxford were awarded their own short corner they were thwarted by Nix's stick stop and clearance to leave the halftime score at 1-0 to Hawks.
With the halftime briefing reminding all that if we kept possession the rest would follow, Hawks half back line of Tiggy/Becky/Jane/Caroline were soon heeding this advice and Oxford were finding it hard to get time on the ball. Despite this several Hawks chances came and went without any addition to the scoreline and it was Oxford with 10mins to go that scored from a rare short corner - 1-1. Having been ahead for so much of the game, Hawks were determined to play strongly through to the final whistle and with 2mins to go were rewarded with another short corner. This time the ball was slipped to Emma whose connection with Pip saw the ball hit the backboard for the winning goal. Final score 2-1 to Hawks and Pip's positive points of playing positive possession proving we were always coming away with the full 3 points!
Thanks to Charlie Baggs and Dave Hughes for umpiring and to Sherene for her tasty malteser and gluten free brownie bakes.
Votes for MOM were shared throughout the team but with most votes MOM went to Nix for her solid defending play.
