Mens 4's visit windy Wycombe, winning 4 -1

21 October 2017, 12:00, Royal Grammar School

Men's 4s 4 - 1 Wycombe Men's 3s

Welcoming a trio of “young guns”, Hawks won again in an entertaining game against Wycombe.

Some excellent hockey was played in what was by far the best performance of the season and with Scraggy, Phil Barnett (MOM) and Maxime prominent in midfield Hawks were always the better side. We should really have killed the game off before half time but some loose finishing kept the opposition in with a shout.

2 nil up at the break, and with the captain yellow carded after a rugby tackle on their advancing forward, we were less than comfortable early in the second half. Wycombe woke up and pulled back to 2.1, although their threat was short lived as Hawks pulled away with two goals late in the game. The goals were shared between 4 and unusually a couple came from short corners, it must have been all the practice?

Tom Murray and Archie were rock solid at the back although as Archie moved further and further up the pitch as the match progressed it was left to Tom to repel the majority of the Wycombe’s attacks.

The most notable crime must be the captain’s, in trying to pass the DOD onto Rodney for nothing more than not being available next week - it was pretty poor behaviour actually after the infamous rugby tackle which propelled their well-built attacker into orbit. And we also learnt something new about Chris Maidlow’s thought processes and it has been suggested that we take a detour via Hollywood Bowl at the next away game so we can compare with the next oppo’s clubhouse – you had to have been there to get this.

No mention of the wind with the abiding memory of the day the rugby tackle…
