Ladies' 3s 4 - 0 Wycombe Ladies 2s
Hawks ladies 3rd XI put on an impressive performance during their first home game of the season against Wycombe 2nd XI.
Hawks started the first half well with strong link up play and went close to opening the scoring when Laura Marshall drove down the right hand side and pulled back the ball to Sienna Robbins but the ball was slightly behind her giving the Wycombe defence time to regroup before blocking Siena’s shot. The half continued with lovely passing hockey between Katie Merrick, Amy Olah and Lexi Newall in the midfield but the home team found themselves going into halftime without the deadlock being broken.
Possibly buoyed by her own team talk, it was Rosie McEwan-Smith who opened the scoring early on in the second half when a transfer from the defence allowed a break down the right hand side and a pulled back by ball from the byline found Rosie unmarked in the D and able to calmly slot home. The goal meant that Wycombe had to push higher and the gaps started to appear for Hawks. Shortly after, the Wycombe keeper logged to save an initial shot and deflected the ball to debutant Alice Potter who brilliantly reverse stick shot into the empty goal.
With 15 minutes to go, Hawks won a short corner which Laura Marshall struck from the top D. With the initial shot saved from the keeper, Rosie pounced on the rebound with a reverse stick “pass” which found Nicky on the back post and the defender made no mistake in getting the ball over the line.
In the dying minutes, another slick quick transfer from the defence of Lucy Birtles, Megan Hope, Kirsty McCullouch and Clare Sibley resulted in one last break down the right hand side where Hawks had been so successful. Another baseline pullback this time found Siena who calmly and confidently sealed a 4-0 win for Hawks!
A great team performance with some “text-book” goals, saw Hawks move to 2nd in the table behind leaders Amersham who they take on next week.
