Oxford Hawks 5s 1:3 Oxford 3s

We were expecting a tough game against the league leaders, who had beaten Hawks 4s in a pre-season friendly, and so it proved; Hawks soaked up early pressure and defended well from a series of penalty corners. The half-court press set-up allowed us to frustrate Oxford’s attack for sometime before eventually succumbing to go 0-1 down from a penalty corner. Midway through the first half Hawks equalised with a superb goal from a fast and direct counter attack by The Hudson brothers, Stephen and Ben, but unfortunately Hawks conceded again just before the break.

In the 2nd half we continued to play well and work extremely hard with only 11 players in the humid and muggy conditions, and were unlucky to have an equaliser ruled out with the whistle already having gone for a foul outside the D. Oxford 3s managed to grab one more goal to seal the game, but overall it was an encouraging outing for the 5s, who can expect simpler opponents and better results if we maintain this level in the weeks ahead.

Spirits were ''buoyed'' throughout the game by the increasingly nonsensical ramblings of our sidelined captain, whose benching through injury appears to be taking its toll!

Away at Wallingford next week, hopefully bringing back some points.
