An inexperienced girls under 14s had their first league game of the season against Wallingford on Sunday and unfortunately came out second best, going down 2-3. With only two players from last year’s team, this was a big ask against an older, more experienced team and for a first run out they did extremely well, although it was disappointing they didn’t win the game having had numerous chances in the first half. Going one nil up through the tireless (until she got tired) Alice Potter, Hawks dominated the first period of play, while newcomer Freya and Caitie (welcomed back after surgery) mopped up at the back. 1-0 up at half time and the lead should have been more and this proved critical to the end result as Wallingford grew into the game and scored twice, although Milly in goal had a great game. Harriet got one back late in the second half, but in truth we ran out of legs and crucially started trying to pass down the middle of the pitch and the away team got their winner. Aoife and Gemma get mentioned in dispatches for their overall good play, but plenty to work on for the whole team in the coming weeks.
