Hawks were confident going into today's game off the back of a solid performance against Reading last weekend. DDespite playing Epsom who have recently been promoted to South 1, the ladies 2s were keen to get a win under their belt.
Both teams started well with Hawks have the edge and retaining possession in our attacking half and penetrating the D on many occasions. However against the run of play Epsom managed to slot a goal home after winning the ball at the top of the D. This didn't phase Hawks and we continued with the majority of the possession in our attacking 25. Just before the first break Hawks managed to secure a short corner which was deflected into the goal by Mary. 1-1.
Hawks maintained the same intensity at the start of the next period of play with several opportunities being created in front of goal. After a scrappy phase of play Emily Wilkinson in true fashion calmly slotted the ball home to give Hawks a 2-1 lead. Hawks continued to battle hard and put Epsom under a tremendous amount of pressure regularly working the ball into the D. From open play Captain Kara Kerr managed to retain possession in a very crowded D, which culminated in catching the keeper off guard and slotted the ball home giving Hawks a 2 goal advantage.
Whilst Hawks had been working hard at pre season conditions contributed to tired legs, yet Hawks managed to maintain the vast majority of possession and control. However in remaining 5 minutes of the game Epsom managed to find their way through the Hawks defence and score 2 goals in quick succession making it 3-3 at the final whistle.
Joint Man of the Match went to Jess and Gemma who both had great games and caused a lot of hassle for the opposition.
Whilst the outcome doesn't reflect the ladies 2s promising performance the team can many positives from it and look forward to building on it next week in the county tournament.
