Saturday morning was predicted to be cloudy with thunderstorms but the day dawned bright and cheery. The ladies 5s met for their first match of the season - a friendly v Maidenhead 4s- who despite being in the league below, were expected to be a good opposition. The first conversation of the day was how warm it was and whether to have a base layer but when Sherene turned up with legs on show ( a rare occurance ) any thoughts of it being cold were dispelled.

With a squad of 15 we had plenty of subs, ably managed by a larger than normal Buffy. There were some new faces on the team with Lara, Emma and Annabelle from the juniors and Jess who had moved from Abingdon.

We started strongly and quickly got into our stride. There was some excellent work in midfield (Caroline, Jane, Lara and Becky) which enabled the play to move up the field to the forwards. This type of play resulted in the  first goal which came from a cracking hit by Caroline from outside the D which was deflected in by Lotty. Two more goals followed with Sherene and Lotty linking well at the front assisted by Pip, Jess and inners, two Emmas and Sophie.

Maidenhead had their chances, showing some good play but were only able to convert one of the eight or so short corners which were well defended by Evelyn, who had a great game in goal, and defenders Annabel,Phil and Susan.

There were a couple of sticky moments for Hawks in both halves with aggressive play by Maidenhead keeping the ball in Hawks' twenty-five but these came to nothing, partly as there was good marking and able support from the inner  and forward line. Maidenhead

The half time score was 3-1 and the final score 4-1 (Lotty 2, Sherene 2),The play was fairly even in terms of possession but Hawks managed to connect better and convert more of their attacks on goal. A very good first game and start to the 2017/18 season.

MoM went to Emma K for her persistent and effective work in the midfield.
