From the league results of the previous week, the ladies 4s had already been crowned league winners so there was no pressure and time to enjoy our hockey. Newbury & Thatcham came out of the blocks strong but after a phase of settling in it was Hawks that played the flowing hockey. Catherine Taylor and Becky Brodie switched the ball from side to side and Vicky Easton, Lissy Momen and Chloe Scragg all held their positions to make the pitch big. Following a run of short corners, which were not our best today, it was a break down the right from Annika Schabacker and a run along the back line that broke the defence and found Rebecca Black who deflected the ball in at the near post. 1-0 and we started to play like champions. The attacking players of Caz Batten, Kim Williams, Charlie Ward, Dizzy Scragg and Kirsty McCulloch were stroking the ball around with confidence it was only a matter of time before Hawks scored another. The goal can from an unlikely source; a strike from a penalty corner rebounded to Jacqui Barlow who slotted the ball into the corner of the goal. It was soon 3-0 with some outstanding team play to find the unmarked Annika who neatly slotted the ball past the advancing goalkeeper. The only blip to the first half was a goal from Newbury; a penalty corner strike was initially saved by Evelyn Hargraves but the goal was scored from the rebound. 3-1 at half-time.
The second half was a different story. We gave the ball away too cheaply and drove into contact. Both teams created chances but no more goals were scored. Really not sure what happened at half-time but the second half was not our best.
But on a positive, 2 games to go, 10 points clear, champions and promotion.
