After a poor performance away at Bicester last year, where despite majority possession Hawks lost 1-0 and Jim Felix nearly decided to pack in his illustrious career, Hawks Men's 6th XI new this was a must win game. The omens were looking mixed...a 'classic' Men's 6th XI line up ( a heady cocktail of age...age...a bit of experience...and age)....Captain Spittles and talisman Wells pulling out due to various age related afflictions ..... and President Roche on duty as umpire.
Hawks took the game to Bicester and soon started to pass the ball with a Gilman/ Venables interchange then finding Darby in the D who slotted home from customary close range. There were jitters though and the youthful legs of Bicester could have seen them claim a goal or two back if they had been a bit more skillful and had we not had the ever assured Felix in goal. Hawks generously gave two short corners to Bicester following joint DoD Darbys infringements in the 25 by not retreating 5m on the hitter which eagle eyed Roche spotted without too much difficulty. All agreed Darbys strengths lay in the other 25. Before half time the ball found Elliott in the D who manufactured a mixed undercut/ fluff shot that looped over the keeper for 2-0 at half time.
Hawks looked to building on the lead in the 2nd half and the goals came slowly but surely from Shirley in open play and from Venables again in open play. Nico producing some strong runs down the right to assist. Hawks then decided to give Bicester a fighting chance with gifted balls from joint DoD Hack (x2 or was it x4) and Bunn giving Felix a bit of excitement.
End result...4-0...and the 3rd win on the trot taking the 6's out of the relegation zone. All in all a good result....will it 4 out of 4...2nd in the league Wallingford next but on the basis that Hawks beat top of the table OMT only two weeks ago anything could happen.
