The girls under 14s bounced back from a chastening defeat against Cirencester last week with an emphatic 11-0 win against High Wycombe on Sunday. You can only play what is in front of you and although the Wycombe girls fought valiantly and never gave up, it was pretty much one way traffic as we penetrated their D over 40 times and Emily in goal probably only had one decent shot to save, which she coped with well. Tilly was in barnstorming form, scoring seven goals – shame these games aren’t in the Fantasy League – with Jade bagging a couple and Olivia S and Gemma one apiece. Gemma dictated the play from centre half and was well assisted by her inside forwards, Emma S, Tilly and Tiggy, while at the back Susie, Annabelle and Emma K mopped up all that came their way. As it became apparent we were the stronger side, we tended to run with the ball too much and we still have much to learn in transitioning the ball from one side of the pitch to the other and making the easy, obvious pass. Indeed, the best goal of the bunch came from a great passage of build up play, followed by a great run and pass from Tallula, who found Jade at the far post to finish well. Simple hockey. It got pretty chilly towards the end of the game so we were pleased when the final whistle blew. Thanks to Meg Potter for her vital role as Assistant Manager (collecting the match fees and making snarky comments from the sideline) and to the two umpires Gail and Andrew, who were great. Hot dogs all round to finish a job well done!
Goals: Tilly 7, Jade 2, Gemma, Olivia S
