It was another masterpiece of selection from the Skipper (Pochetino like). his powers of persuasion to get the saviours from last week to turn out before their house hockey meant that the looming relegation is still pressing but more avoidable.
He was helped by umpires in the guise of Sean and Niall who seemed to know more of the Hawks team than their own, and it was a very level playing field all match.
The result from the week before beating top of the table OMT hadn't gone unnoticed by the Oxford skipper, and they soon realised why that had happened once the game had started.
Despite that, the Mens 6's went down early on to a remarkable piece of awful defending, which Jim "the Cat" felix responded to with "what part of "mark him" don't you understand??" as he booted the ball back to the halfway line. Perhaps the party that the u 18's had all been to was going to be a crucial factor.....Luckily, those fears weren't realised, and useful posession gave Elliott the chance to scramble in (he might describe it differently..) an equaliser.
The game changed as Archie and Tommy started to make inroads in to the Oxford half, and the patient John Black jnr provided a useful outlet on the left. Shambles managed to slot in from a short, 2-1 and all good..but the persistent promotion challengers came straight back with a goal from a short, although quite where the runners ran to, I cant tell you, it certainly wasn't to anyone with a blue shirt on.
Anyway, the fog lifted from the youngsters, messrs Venables and Robins ran hard, Charlie Taylor had a good game up front although bizarrely got a green, Nico also had a good game, and somehow Shambles and Elliott both scored two goals.
Tommy Dawes and Shambles (???) were closely pipped by Archie Spittles for MoM, and he certainly got to the Oxford team so much that towards the end, Oxford were trying to emulate Scotland's Rugby team in their attempts to disposess him.
6 out of 6 points, Bicester next week, Gilman has been recalled, although he hasn't replied yet....
