With a different team from previous weeks, Oxford Hawks Ladies 2s headed to West Hampstead in search of a much needed victory, which seemed to have escaped them of late. Buoyed in the knowledge that our last outing against this team brought a 6-2 home win, it was definitely one where we could grab much needed 3 points.
We started really well, pressuring their keeper straight from the first whistle. We learnt quickly that by moving the ball into space early, the West Hampstead defenders were unlikely to be able to keep pace. Despite numerous attacks and many deflection attempts from the forwards, we found ourselves locked at 0-0 at half time.
Rory's pep talk helped us build on all the positives we could take from a difficult first half, so out we headed for round 2, snow still falling. Player of the match Meg Smith and Lex Thomas were passing the ball beautifully from the back of the pitch, biding their time until a pass was on. West Hampstead were lucky with a few breaks but goalkeeper Emma Page put in a great performance to keep us level.
Meg Smith eventually found the goal through a short corner play 15 minutes from the end. We were relived to have finally broken the deadlock. We survived a West Hampstead short corner attempt in the last play of the game and left London feeling upbeat before our final five games of the season.
