Hawks were put under pressure from the start by a very strong Amersham and Chalfont team. Having held them off at 0-0 in our first-round match until they scored in the dying seconds, Hawks were surprised by a team that had developed considerably over the season, and found themselves 2 goals down within the first 10 minutes.
Our defence were under great pressure with relentless attacks from Amersham who also made it very difficult for us to clear the ball up to the midfield. Hawks struggled to keep their structure and at times impeded each other. 2-0 at half time. Time to catch our breath and work out a strategy for a comeback.
We worked better as a team in the second half, keeping our structure better and much more of the game was spent with Hawks on the attack. Ruth, Sophie, Gail and Maddie worked tirelessly in midfield to get the ball up to our forwards and before long we scored from a lovely cross in by Dette, finished at an awkward angle by Clare. Spirits were lifted and Hawks fought on, however Amersham responded with another goal only minutes later.
An outstanding performance in defence by Annabelle Page earned her the Man of the match nomination. Great support from Sue and help from our hardworking midfield players held the Amersham forwards off as much as possible and they were only allowed one more goal against us.
Our second half performance was much better however we were clearly fighting a battle against a team that were "out of our league". The final score was 1-4.
Many thanks to our umpires Lucy Birtles and Nicky Thornton.
Goal: Clare Strickland open play.
