A sunny Saturday was the backdrop for our away match against South Berks for the first match in February. After narrowly losing 2-1 at home in October and wanting to continue our winning streak from January, Hawks 3’s were ready for the challenge. After a long and intense warm up, we had a really strong first ten minutes with dynamic runs from our forwards to break up South Berks’s press.
Their strong press did eventually break down our play and they attacked our D, where Linda made an excellent save but was taken out by the opposition in the process! This was the first of our injuries and unsettled our structure slightly. The first half was end to end play as both teams made unforced errors and turned the ball over quickly. It was Hawks that had the pace and skill to get on the scoreboard first though after another legendary run down the line from Emily Dawes who slipped it under her shoulder to Lizzie at top D. As always, Lizzie remained composed and smashed the ball into the bottom right corner! 1-0 Hawks at half time.
A positive and motivating team talk saw us pushing hard again in the second half. However, South Berks were growing more determined and aggressive in their attacks so when a bobbling ball came across the D, their player capitalised on it for a tap in to take us to 1-1 within the first 5 minutes. Disaster struck again as Clare took a head on collision in a tackle and had to go off to ice her egghead! Nicky and Lucy held strong in defence though, even keeping their heads after being taken out in a sliding tackle.
With plenty of time still on the clock, we didn’t give up and credit to our forwards and inners who worked relentlessly to turnover the ball against a physical team. Emma and Emily used their speed and long legs as well as some excellent 3D skills to move up the pitch. We won a handful of shorts, pushing for opportunities until the last minute but we just didn’t manage to convert them this time.
A performance we should be proud of and a fair result against a team 8 points and 3 places above us. MOM went to our Captain Lizzie who kept us calm and focused in a tense match and DOD to Alex for forgetting her trousers after showering! Bring on top of the table Sonning 1s at home next week.
