It was a funny old game.
Hawks dominated the game from start to finish but it was not played at our usual pace; the pitch was fast but heavy. With ease Hawks played the ball around the opposition even though they defended in numbers but it felt like one of those days of so much possession but couldn’t quite connect for a goal. However, the breakthrough finally came. There was a foul at the top of the circle and everybody stopped expecting the whistle to be blown, but Dizzy carried on and the umpire played the advantage and the ball was hit with power into the back of the net. An easy 1-0 at half-time but we had so many gears to move up.
In the second half Newbury tired as they constantly chased the game. The travelling Hawks crowd encouraged from the side-line and we found ourselves 2-0 up. Maddie Whitwell converted from a short corner to ease the anxiety and Hawks moved up another gear. Newbury continued to battle and won their only penalty corner of the game which was watched wide by goalkeeper Olivia Clark; had she needed to save it it would have been her only touch of the game. Maddie got her second following a great move down the right, swift passing between Jen Wells and Holly Senior eventually resulted in a piercing ball into the circle which Maddie dispatched in one flowing movement. The “wall” of Becky Brodie and Jacqui Barlow stood strong for another clean sheet and the team remain top of the league with one final game before the Christmas break.
