After two weeks without hockey due to frozen pitches and dodgy floodlights, the 7s were all raring to play. This was lucky because it was freezing, very dark, and definitely sub-optimal playing conditions! With our handful of supporters (mainly of the canine variety) cheering us on, we went on to play a good match

In the first half we had a lot of attacks at goal, but had no luck. The Abingdon defence was strong and the goalie was excellent, saving multiple goals and ending up as their man of the match. Abingdon had a few break aways, but lacked control and we didn't concede or score any goals

After an inspiring team talk from Bella and Deborah, Claire E (little Claire) went on to score in the first minute of the second half. It was rather magnificent and involved a skidding dive. Claire was our well deserved man of the match. Our second goal, from Mimi, was thwarted by the whistle awarding us a short corner (which was not successful!). It was an excellent goal and incredibly bad luck with whistle timing.

The second half saw some excellent passing between players; Bella linked the play nicely in the middle, Clare S (bigger Clare) had some great runs loosing her opposition and Deborah and Wendy were busy encouraging us from the back. The inners and forwards made some brilliant attempts at goal, which were saved. The ball very rarely left our half and we had the vast majority of ball possession. We were happy with our victory, despite feeling slightly as though the goal difference could have been more impressive. "It was a curious game" as Rachel put it.

Congratulations to Pippa and Polly who made their debut performances for the 7s. They were both in exactly the right place at the right time and made us feel exhausted by all of their running! Well done, again, to Little Claire for being a well deserved Man of the Match.

Thanks to Matt Grainge for taking the photos.
