Hawks Ladies 3s were geared up for a tough match against Amersham 1s but perhaps weren't quite expecting to go a goal down in the first minute!
Amersham's first goal came from a clinical short corner within the first minute or two of play. Amersham entered the D, found a foot, and put together a simple and efficient in-and-out short corner routine which had the ball cleanly in the back of the net within seconds.
Hawks rallied well and had some good leads, getting in front of the ball and finding a few opportunities to score without ever quite looking like we would put the ball in the back of the goal. Amersham dominated possession, but to our credit we had lots of breaks and certainly stretched Amersham's defence at times.
Amersham's second goal came moments into the second half when a long corner was taken by the opposition and Hawks were within five metres and impulsively interfered with play. The umpire penalised with a short corner which Amersham were able to put away on the second shot. Emma saved the first shot but the ball was then passed to the right post and put in.
On the turn around, Emily Dawes had a very nice run, very close but failed to finish off the shot and score.
Kudos to our keeper Emma who made a run of extraordinary saves against some of Amersham's finest work, keeping Hawks within reach of the game when we might otherwise have been outclassed.
Hawks had a much better second half and were unlucky not to make the most of our opportunities. We worked very hard and the defenders and half backs (including our skipper who was on fine form in centre half) showed considerable discipline in dealing with (most of) Amersham's runs on goal. There were some moments which showed improvements on what we have been working on - playing the ball into space on the wing, working in pairs and threes, a solid press, and some good linking play through the inners and forwards - of which we should be proud.
Thanks to Amersham for a very sportsmanlike and enjoyable (if hard-fought) match.
MOM went to Lizzie for her tireless efforts in the middle of the pitch.
