Hawks Ladies 3rd XI travelled to top of the league Sonning Ladies 1st XI this week, determined to put some excellent training sessions with Rory into fruition.
The visitors started well and 10 minutes into the first half, Megan Minton intercepted a wayward pass from a Sonning 16 and passed quickly to forward Lizzie Siese. Lizzie dribbled passed one defender and slipped the ball to Emma Stephenson to struck but the initial shot was saved. Stephenson pounced on the rebound and slipped the ball into the goal on her reverse. 1-0 to Hawks and a dream start for the girls in maroon.
Ready for the backlash, Hawks instead continued to pile pressure onto the league leaders and will rue chances missed on the posts. The transfer around the back from Megan Hope and Nicky Thornton looked slick and kept the Sonning forwards running without gaining positive results. Late on in the first half, Sonning broke and won a short corner and their slick routine led to an equaliser which Olivia Clarke could do nothing about on the post
Hawks went in at half time at 1-1 but wary that their 13 woman squad would have to put in a lot of legwork against the 16 Sonning players.
It turned out to be a game of two halves and despite some great distribution going forward from Katie Merrick and Rosie McEwan Smith, Hawks found themselves with a lot more defensive work to do in the second half.
Olivia Clarke continued the great season she's been having with some crucial saves but the amount of short corners conceded inevitably led to Hawks conceding two goals in quick succession.
The final score ended at 3-1 with Hawks pleased with the team performance and hoping to get some more points on the board in the following weeks.
