The trouble with having a 2 week break for half term is people get out of the habit of playing hockey.  So we had a bare team of eleven until Indya’s class was cancelled and she could come too.  The problem was everyone wanted to play defence (conversely everyone playing 6s wanted to be a forward).  So with many people playing out of position we started hesitantly.  Charlotte in goal was required to do some skilful saves so it was not until twelve minutes in after a lot of pressure that they scored. Indya and Wendy had firm control at the back for the rest of the half so we held them off.

At half time we agreed that we needed to talk to each other more and come to meet the ball.  We were just not keeping possession enough.  Alice, playing left half, had a terrific game and Annabel, also playing out of position, as right half was very strong.  We relied very heavily on Jess in the middle to hold it together and she was a rock.

Lara, who was also benching for the 6s later, had a great game as left inner.  Jo, also out of position, was playing right inner and was good at chasing back to help in defence as well as building the game.  We struggled to get the ball to Mimi on the left wing and she was unlucky not to score.  Kat had an excellent game as centre forward and Ellie “I can play anywhere” made her debut as right wing.  It was lovely to see her get into the game as it went on.

Charlotte, facing the sun, thought a shot on goal was outside and let it go but it was inside and therefore a goal.  Sorry, Charlotte, we should have called it!  The they got one last goal struck from just inside the baseline which slipped inside the far post.

Thank you to Gail for umpiring and to our two supporters who got very cold.  Thank you to everyone who agreed to play out of position which was most people!  There were many nominations for player of the match but it went to Alice.
