Ladies 5s secure another 1-0 win away at Wycombe
22 October 2016, 10:10, Cressex
Ladies' 5s 1 - 0 Wycombe Ladies 3s
An early push back time of 10:10 saw the merry band of 15 travel down the M40 through the fog to Cressex for the last league game before the half term break against Wycombe. In the changing rooms, Captain Susan back from her foreign travels made sure that we all swopped names and numbers ahead of Linda using her whiteboard skills to go through the press, out letting and general positioning. We were as ready as we could be as we headed out for an enthusiastic (as per Alice) warm up routine led by Phil. With Deborah standing in goal we started the first half, having promised her to not let the ball into her D, with some promising attacking moves and it wasn't long before 'black-eyed' Sherene got past the Wycombe defence to slap the ball into the goal. Sadly the ball had gone in via the outside of the post so the 'goal' did not count. With Caroline holding the centre mid ground Hawks continued to pile on the pressure which was rewarded by another Sherene strike which this time passed the right side of the post to give Hawks the lead. Wycombe struggled to get the ball forward until the last play of the half when a quick break saw Deborah having to touch the ball for the first time to prevent Wycombe from scoring any equaliser.
With the half-time chat about maintaining positions and passing to our own players we all felt that we were capable of more goals in the second half. However Wycombe had other ideas and despite several chances Hawks were unable to secure a second goal. Wycombe continued to push forward and had multiple short corner opportunities awarded all of which Hawks runners Zoe and Becky put stick, body and shins on the line to stop them striking the ball. When the final whistle was eventually blown, unlike last week's 1-0 win, all 15 Hawks players were present and correct for a team photos and able to enjoy tea and cake with no trips to A&E!
