A frustrating Saturday for the ladies 3s in the early game at BRN. After a great Thursday night training session the atmosphere was positive, with us looking to take what we'd worked on into the game against the unknown of newly formed South Berkshire 1st XI.
The game started well with some great movement going forward but we couldn't quite capitalise in the D. South Berkshire were quick on the turnover but some good structure and team work, plus some excellent saves from Olivia in goal kept the score line 0-0 until half time.
After some direction in the team talk to make sure we were first to those 50/50 balls and to not force the ball through players, as this was where South Berkshire were particularly strong, the end to end play continued until a short way into the second half we outletted the ball from the defence to Emma on the half way line. Her extraordinary 50 yard sprint outpaced their defence, and a with a final pass to Georgia in the D the ball was slotted into the back of the net.
Hawks shouted for composure and sensible play but unfortunately not long after South Berkshire won a corner which they converted following a little bad luck from the Hawks defenders. The pace and movement continued but Hawks just couldn't quite link it all together, and with a brief lapse in concentration South Berkshire scored their second with 10 minutes to go.
Spurred on by the support on the sidelines, Hawks continued fighting to the end and never gave up but just didn't find the back of the net to take the draw in what was an evenly fought match. Hawks put in a strong performance against a first eleven side and definitely have a lot more to offer. Our umpires (thanks to both) congratulated our determination and commented that it was one of the best fought games in the season so far. Watch this space!
